In padel, very often, <em>you<\/em> are the one telling the client what to build. And if the base is wrong, you find out on the day you try to stand up 3&ndash;4 tonnes of galvanised steel and twelve-millimetre toughened glass.<\/p>\n<p>Every number here is a <strong>reference range drawn from published industry practice and our own project experience<\/strong>. None of it is a foundation design. In practice that means a perimeter ring beam, a full reinforced slab, or pad footings under each post.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Perimeter reinforced concrete ring beam<\/strong> &mdash; the most common outdoor padel court solution worldwide. A continuous in-situ beam around the court, nominal surface width around 400&nbsp;mm, typical section on the order of 30&times;30&nbsp;cm to 40&times;40&nbsp;cm, always confirmed by calculation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Full reinforced slab with integral ring beam<\/strong> &mdash; generally 15&ndash;25&nbsp;cm thick, minimum plan size around 21&nbsp;m &times; 11&nbsp;m per court. The enclosure is a 20&nbsp;m &times; 10&nbsp;m box with walls 3&ndash;4&nbsp;m high, largely made of glass &mdash; a very large surface presented to the wind.<\/p>\n<p>In exposed regions the lateral force on those walls can run into the order of 20&ndash;25&nbsp;kN, with substantial overturning moments at the base plates. A tennis fence does not behave like this. A shopfront does not behave like this. The load path ends at your anchor bolts, and the anchor bolts end in the client&#8217;s concrete.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world insight.<\/strong> The most useful question you can ask a client on the first technical call is not &#8220;what is your budget&#8221; but &#8220;who is designing the foundation, and have they been appointed?&#8221; On a four-court project we shipped to Romania through Constan&#539;a, a local structural engineer was already engaged before the order was confirmed, and everything downstream &mdash; base plate positions, conduit routes, pour sequence &mdash; ran cleanly. Where nobody has been appointed, the outdoor padel court foundation becomes a negotiation between dealer, concrete contractor and client. A 25&nbsp;cm slab on soft made-ground with no sub-base preparation will perform worse than a well-detailed 300&nbsp;mm ring beam on competent subgrade.<\/p>\n<p>What actually controls performance is the combination of bearing capacity, reinforcement layout, embedment depth and the quality of the compacted material underneath. When a dealer asks me for &#8220;the thickness,&#8221; what they really need is the load data to hand their engineer: structure self-weight, base plate positions and hole patterns, and the maximum design windspeed of the enclosure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world insight.<\/strong> Plan the future before you pour. On a covered-court enquiry from the Gulf, the client wanted courts first and a canopy &#8220;maybe next year.&#8221; Adding a canopy later means new foundations placed around an existing ring beam, in the exact zone where you also need wheelchair access and out-of-court space. Ask the question at quotation stage, every time.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s3\">What Concrete Strength and Reinforcement Does an Outdoor Padel Court Need?<\/h2>\n<p>Concrete for an outdoor padel court foundation is usually specified around C25\/30 in European terms, moving to C30\/37 or higher in exposed, coastal or freeze-thaw locations. Reinforcement is typically a cage of longitudinal bars with closed links in a ring beam, or two layers of mesh in a slab. Anchors near a beam edge generate splitting forces in the concrete. If the cage stops short, or the links are too widely spaced exactly where the base plates land, you can get edge spalling under wind loading even though the concrete class was correct. Hand the base plate layout to the engineer before the steel is fixed, not after the pour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world insight.<\/strong> If you come from aluminium and glass installation you already know this instinct from bracket fixing &mdash; edge distance, splitting, the difference between a bracket that holds and one that crazes the concrete around it. The instinct is correct. An outdoor padel court simply applies it at a larger scale, outdoors, with cyclic wind loading rather than static dead load.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s4\">How Are Outdoor Padel Court Posts Anchored to the Concrete?<\/h2>\n<p>Outdoor padel court posts are supplied with welded base plates and fixed to cured concrete with expansion anchors or chemical (resin) anchors, typically drilled around 100&nbsp;mm into sound structural concrete. A galvanised structure with plain steel bolts shows rust streaks within a season, and the bolt heads become the first corrosion failure point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Deep insight.<\/strong> There is a sequencing decision here that dealers coming from facade work often get wrong on their first <a href=\"https:\/\/panocourt.com\/padel-court-installation\/\">installazione di un campo da padel<\/a>. In curtain wall you set cast-in channels or pre-position brackets to a survey grid. On an outdoor padel court the frame is assembled as a self-supporting structure first, adjusted until it is genuinely square and plumb, and only then locked to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>If you pre-drill the anchor pattern from a drawing and the concrete setting-out is 15&nbsp;mm off, you will spend a day fighting holes that do not line up. Let the structure find its own geometry, then anchor it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world insight.<\/strong> Bring the right drill, and enough of them. A single court has a lot of anchor positions, and hammer drilling into a well-cured C30 ring beam is slow work in high ambient temperature. On tropical island projects &mdash; we shipped courts to a club development on Belitung Island in Indonesia &mdash; heat, humidity and limited site power are as much a schedule risk as the technical work. The setting-out rectangle must be accurate and square before anything is erected, and the finished playing surface must not deviate more than about &plusmn;6&nbsp;mm under a 3&nbsp;m straightedge. Base geometry errors appear here first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Deep insight.<\/strong> An outdoor padel court is one of the few sports structures where base tolerance and product tolerance are visible to the end user in the same instant. If the ring beam twists by a centimetre over its length, the glass line goes out of plane, panel gaps become uneven, and players see it. Uneven gaps also create finger-trap risk and irregular rebound. The &plusmn;6&nbsp;mm figure is not perfectionism; it is the point at which ball behaviour stops being consistent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world insight.<\/strong> Take your own levels on day one and photograph them. Every experienced installer I know has been handed a base that &#8220;was checked&#8221; and was not. A twenty-minute laser survey before you unpack a single crate converts a future argument into a documented condition report. If the base is out, you find out while the pallets are still strapped.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s6\">How Should an Outdoor Padel Court Be Drained?<\/h2>\n<p>An outdoor padel court drains primarily by percolation through a porous build-up rather than by surface run-off. Water passes through the artificial grass and porous asphalt into the aggregate sub-base, then to perimeter perforated drains inside the ring beam, and out through a pipe cast through the beam to an outfall or soakaway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reference outdoor build-up, bottom to top<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Formation:<\/strong> strip turf and topsoil, at least 75&nbsp;mm, with all organic material removed. Cut and fill in compacted layers no thicker than 150&nbsp;mm. Soft spots dug out and backfilled.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geotextile membrane<\/strong> over the formation &mdash; separation, load spread, a slip plane against reflective cracking, and weed suppression.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Free-draining, non-frost-susceptible aggregate sub-base<\/strong>, average around 250&nbsp;mm; roughly 150&nbsp;mm of clean stone is a common minimum on genuinely good ground.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Porous asphalt in two courses:<\/strong> approximately 40&nbsp;mm compacted binder course plus 25&nbsp;mm compacted surface course, around 65&nbsp;mm total, open-graded so it stays permeable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Padel-specific sand-dressed artificial grass<\/strong>, loose laid and infilled with graded silica sand.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Key facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Perimeter perforated drains inside the ring beam, laid at falls of at least 1:200, in geotextile-lined trenches backfilled with clean graded stone.<\/li>\n<li>Catchwater drains wherever surface water can run onto the outdoor padel court from surrounding ground &mdash; the failure nobody plans for.<\/li>\n<li>If impervious concrete replaces the porous build-up, the slab must be laid to falls, because water cannot pass through it.<\/li>\n<li>Water permeability for outdoor turf systems is commonly specified at 500&nbsp;mm\/hr or better.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Deep insight.<\/strong> Drainage failures rarely come from the court itself. They come from the site around it. A court built two hundred millimetres below the surrounding car park will collect every storm the car park sheds, no matter how permeable the build-up is. Walk the perimeter, ask where water goes in a heavy storm, and design catchwater interception before you optimise the sub-base.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world insight.<\/strong> In tropical and monsoon markets, drainage decides whether an outdoor padel court plays 300 days a year or 200. On the Indonesian island project, rainfall <em>intensity<\/em> rather than annual rainfall was the governing factor &mdash; short, extremely heavy events. If you are quoting in Southeast Asia, the Gulf coast, the Caribbean or West Africa, get local rainfall intensity data in front of the drainage designer. It changes outfall sizing, not just gradient.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s7\">What Must Be Buried Before an Outdoor Padel Court Base Is Poured?<\/h2>\n<p>Electrical ducting. Lighting cable ducts should be laid in plastic pipework at a depth of at least 450&nbsp;mm below the finished court surface, with draw pits flush at finished level wherever future re-cabling access will be needed. On an outdoor padel court this is the most expensive small mistake available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Duct depth of 450&nbsp;mm or more protects ducts during future resurfacing, which happens roughly every five years depending on use.<\/li>\n<li>Cable routes run from the supply position to each light pole, with the final rise inside the light pole weldment tube.<\/li>\n<li>Two or more courts need a main breaker and a residual current device centrally, plus a sub-circuit breaker per court.<\/li>\n<li>All joints and switches fully enclosed, no exposed connections, all cable in UV-resistant corrugated conduit against rain and sunlight.<\/li>\n<li>Typical lighting load is around 1.2&ndash;2.4&nbsp;kW per court on single phase; multi-court venues usually need three phase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Deep insight.<\/strong> Once the asphalt is down and the turf is glued and sanded, a forgotten duct means either a surface-mounted cable route that looks like an afterthought forever, or cutting into a brand-new surface. I have watched dealers absorb that cost themselves to protect the relationship. Put the duct layout into the client&#8217;s hands at the same time as the base plate layout, and get it signed.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s8\">Who Designs the Foundation &mdash; Manufacturer or Local Engineer?<\/h2>\n<p>A padel court manufacturer provides enclosure data: base plate layouts and anchor hole positions, structure weights, the maximum design windspeed of the supplied enclosure, and installation drawings. Ground conditions, frost depth, wind maps and seismic zones are local. Published UK guidance is direct: generic or copied foundation drawings are not acceptable, and the design must sit behind a named engineer&#8217;s professional indemnity insurance. A supplier handing you a universal drawing has not saved you a fee &mdash; they have transferred the liability to you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world insight.<\/strong> This is good commercial news for dealers. If every outdoor padel court foundation must be engineered locally, a local dealer with a relationship to a local structural engineer cannot be replaced by a website. Build that relationship early. The dealers who win multi-court club projects are the ones who can say &#8220;here is my engineer, here are three courts he has already signed off&#8221; in the first meeting.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"s9\">What Transfers from Glass and Aluminium Work to Outdoor Padel Court Installation?<\/h2>\n<p>Most of your existing skill set transfers directly. Glass handling, gasket discipline, torque control, squareness and edge-distance judgement are the same crafts.
